Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
"On the eve of your birth ... the Earth and her creatures with the Sun and the Moon all moved in their places, each ready to greet you the very first moment of the very first day you arrived."
Every child loves to hear the story of how he or she came into the world, but usually very little attention is paid to how the world was in that magical moment. For any family who feels a special connection to nature and the flow of life, On the Day You Were Born will help baby understand how each of us is received not just by our family, but by the universe and its gentle ways. The simple, bright pictures in Debra Frasier's book recall Matisse, and they won the book a Parents' Choice Award for illustration. In the final pages, each illustration and theme in the book (migrating animals, gravity, glowing moon, rising tide, etc.) is explained in simple and direct language that can be used to teach older children how nature works on our planet, and how Earth works in the universe.

This beautiful hardcover book is accompanied by a washable, soft rattle that has a donut-shaped yellow handle with "Welcome" embroidered on it in blue thread. The head of the rattle is a round, blue sky embroidered with yellow stars and a red figure of a child dancing. (From birth) --Katherine Ferguson

Product Description

Debra Frasier's modern classic On the Day You Were Born has been welcoming babies into the world for more than a decade--and has sold over a million copies. Now this favorite hardcover book comes to life with a musical CD featuring an original composition by Matthew Smith to accompany the author's moving narration.

The spinning earth, the glowing moon, the rising tides--each natural wonder appears in an evocative instrumental arrangement that makes for a moving and memorable gift, perfect to celebrate the arrival of every new baby.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic book   July 28, 2010
M. Dani Borton (Orlando, FL)
This book is great to read to your children! It's so sweet and talks about how the world moves and works and how they are now a part of it. Out of all the books we received when my girl was born, this is the one I choose when giving a gift to new parents.

5 out of 5 stars Children's book shows child's specialness and place in the world   February 14, 2010

A wonderful book for children to show how special they are and how the world rejoices when they are born. Beautiful art work. Great CD.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for a baby gift!   February 7, 2010
Caryn Jones (Colorado, USA)
My aunt and uncle gave this to my son when they came to the hospital to meet him. I've pulled it out a few times to read it to him when I've been feeling sentimental (it usually makes me tear up a little), but about two weeks ago I pulled it out and got requests for "again" and now it's the book he wants to read before every nap and bedtime. My husband is not a very sentimental guy, but last night he requested that we purchase it for some good friends of ours who just had a little girl. I was shocked.

A piece of advice for gift givers:
DO make sure you inscribe it with your name(s), a message and the date. It will mean so much. Our son won't let us continue reading if we don't read him the message from my aunt and uncle...he'll keep interrupting with their names.

A piece of advice for parents:
Yes, the pictures are in an abstract style, but that gives you an opportunity to help your child start to recognize more abstract ideas. Point out not only what's what in the pictures (a whale, a bird, etc.) but point out the features of those animals (tails, heads, feet, wings, etc.). Our son can point out more animals and features every time we read it.

5 out of 5 stars Wondeful book for new parents and new babies!   February 7, 2010
Deborah Zeigler (Pompton Plains, NJ USA)
I bought six copies of this book because it is the best gift for parents and babies. My hairdresser, the concierge in my building, a yuppie couple -- all with first-borns are recent recipients! When I asked the 7 and 8-year old children of friends who had a copy of it, they wanted to have their mother read it to them again. Even I get misty reading it aloud myself! Has a "green" message but mainly it is a loving welcome to the world.

5 out of 5 stars A HUGE HUG for the soul   January 31, 2010
Ace (East Coast)
This is a child's book----- or is it really??????

When I was still recovering from (chidhood and adult) abuse, I went into a bookstore one day and idly glanced thru the colorful books on display.

When I read through this book, the tears started flowing and could not stop. The book was a HUGE HUG, and an affirmation I needed to keep me going, keep healing.

Published first in 1991, it did not, at that time, have a musical CD -- so I have no idea what the music is like. But the book itself is sweet music to the heart and soul.

I HIGHLY recommend this to ANYONE -- male and female, young and old, bewteen 9 and 99 (or younger, or older).
