Best Teaching Book out there July 7, 2010 Chicagoman (USA) Those who want to be effective teachers and teach to their fullest potential will buy this book. If you're a teacher, why would you want to be anything less than that?
Love it! July 6, 2010 januree This book is great. It has so much great information and is easy to read and understand. I love it!
Good Advice But Too Repetitive June 18, 2010 Mrs. B (USA) I borrowed this book from the local library along with a few others as I am currently working toward licensure in my state. In all honesty, I felt that there was some very useful information in this book that I will keep in mind as I begin my teaching career. However, the book could have been MUCH shorter. I found myself reading the same statements over and over again, perhaps phrased differently, but nevertheless the same. The tone and style of the writing made me feel like I was being talked down to. If someone needs everything spelled out for them in the shortest words possible and repeated over and over again, perhaps teaching is not for them!
Practical Classroom Management Overlooked in College Courses June 10, 2010 Richard A. Jeffries (Smyrna, TN USA) I was given this book 14 years ago when I started teaching in high school, and I still refer to it at the beginning of each new school year. Although most of the techniques work better at elementary or middle school level, the ideas are well though out. Classroom management skills are glossed over in college education courses to train new teachers.
School administrators and school boards are more interested in test results and placement scores, but teachers must have a foundation of what to do with their students on a daily basis and how to organize their classroom. Wong's book helps with the first few days of school when things are the most hectic for a teacher, especially a young, new teacher. His techniques don't work for all occasions and all grade levels as I mentioned, but it gives a new teacher a headstart for the beginning of a school year.
A teacher who is organized and can manage a classroom of diverese students will see positive results as the year progresses, and then the administrators and school board can worry about the test scores! Give this book a try, new teachers, it's worth a look.
The First Days of School May 9, 2010 E. Peraza (Miramar, Florida) This book is very helpful for all beginning educators, but specially for those who will be setting foot in a classroom by themselves for the first time. It is full of ideas and answers to even the most simple questions one may have. It also provides a very good idea of what to expect during those first days of your new carrier.
