Product Description
Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another... In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon--when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach--an "outlander"--in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord...1743. Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire's destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life ...and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Amazon.com Review
In Outlander, a 600-page time-travel romance, strong-willed and sensual Claire Randall leads a double life with a husband in one century, and a lover in another. Torn between fidelity and desire, she struggles to understand the pure intent of her heart. But don't let the number of pages and the Scottish dialect scare you. It's one of the fastest reads you'll have in your library.

While on her second honeymoon in the British Isles, Claire touches a boulder that hurls her back in time to the forbidden Castle Leoch with the MacKenzie clan. Not understanding the forces that brought her there, she becomes ensnared in life-threatening situations with a Scots warrior named James Fraser. But it isn't all spies and drudgery that she must endure. For amid her new surroundings and the terrors she faces, she is lured into love and passion like she's never known before.

I was lame and sore in every muscle when I woke next morning. I shuffled to the privy closet, then to the wash basin. My innards felt like churned butter. It felt as though I had been beaten with a blunt object, I reflected, then thought that that was very near the truth. The blunt object in question was visible as I came back to bed, looking now relatively harmless. Its possessor [Jamie] woke as I sat next to him, and examined me with something that looked very much like male smugness."
Gabaldon creates characters that you'll remember, laugh with, cry with, and cheer for long after you've finished the book. --Candy Paape

5 out of 5 stars Outlander series displaced my most fave book series after 48 years in first place!   July 27, 2010
DDavis (NE OH USA)
Started reading the first book in the Outlander series on July 1. Finished the seventh book on July 23. Began the second reading on July 24.

For more than 48 years my favorite historical romance novel has been "Angelique," followed by the subsequent novels in the Angelique series which were written over a span of nearly four decades by husband/wife team known collectively as Sergeanne Golon. Never in my life did I expect my beloved Angelique series to be usurped. Geoffrey and Angelique, I still love ya, but it is time to step aside.

Hello Jamie and Claire!

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable...but   July 23, 2010

I basically enjoyed the book, but while many cringed at the scene where Jamie beats Claire, I found reading about one child whipping after another disturbing to say the least. Claire is a grown woman and in the end, was able to make him swear never to hurt her like that again. The brutalized children can't say the same. It also bothered me when Claire asked Jamie if he would beat their kids, and when he answered yes, she didn't put up a fight. I'd like to move on in the series, but if I have to read chapter after chapter about child abuse, no thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Difficult to put down!   July 19, 2010

Diana Gabaldon has what I consider a special author's voice, one that speaks to me in a way that I truly enjoy and appreciate. Outlander is a very intense and beautifully written historical romance novel. I bought this book at the airport; I had a long flight awaiting me and I was looking for something to entertain me. The story captivated me from the very first page and I was reading avidly until the plane landed to my destiny. I consider Outlander a very intense, beautifully written combination of time travel-mystery-historical-adventure and romance novel, very difficult to put down.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Romance   July 19, 2010

I read romance and I read it because of the feel-good associated with it. I was sure Outlander would be with me on a deserted island after reading the "Jamieisms" - google it and you'll find some wonderful lines that would make you sigh and want to buy 2 copies so you could give one to your significant other.
Now even those amazing lines leave me with a bitter taste. And, unlike many of the customers that gave an 1 star review, I've read and enjoyed BDSM books but this one ... I don't know how to take it out of my mind! I'll have to reread Lady Sophia's Lover by Lisa Kleypas because only the suave, patient, oper-minded Ross can bring back the sweet feelings I had towards historicals.
I can't ignore the 1000+ glowing reviews, it's what kept me reading this till the end. I even like the author (the person, after reading interviews with her). I even found a lot of funny moments and overall Outlander is well written (I don't mean the plot but the way the words flow...). I'm sure you're planning to read it!
It's such an event-book that you'll finally have to! But please check even the 1 star reviews so you are prepared.
IF YOU HAVE READ IT and now you check the negative reviews to make sure you're not alone and IF YOU'RE INTO ROMANCE, check Karen Marie Moning's Highlanders (the best of the series start at book 3) so you'll find a man who knows how to treat a woman. And a real woman. Even better, sample the audiobooks where the narrator, Phil Gigante, will erase all you bad memories :) It will also help alleviate the unavoidable disappointment and the wish to switch to reading thrillers, that way you are sure what to expect.

5 out of 5 stars Where's my Jamie??   July 17, 2010

I found this book to be one of my favorite books that I have ever come across. I laughed, cried, and fell in love with the characters of the book. I love how Claire picked herself up by the boot straps and kept moving forward. Jamie is by far my favorite character and how he gives every part of himself to her. I feel as if the characters in my book are part of my life! Great job Diana Gabaldon, brilliant!
