Product Description
By Johnny Eugenio.Illustrated by Ryan Benjamin.Lil' Jordan's 9 Holes of Fear carefully examines the sport of golf from the perspective of an athletically-inclined child. Johnny Eugenio was inspired by one of his sons, named Jordan, who started golfing at the tender age of two. His "Lil' Jordan" has been the reason for wanting to encourage more children to play the game of golf. Throughout his adventures, Lil' Jordan learns to face his fears. He tackles apprehension about monsters lurking in unexpected places, overcomes mental obstacles related to sports, and discovers the rewards associated with working hard and staying focused. Includes color illustrations and a 22 minute audio CD of the book that kids will enjoy listening to.

Customer Reviews:
5 out of 5 stars A must read for any young (or old) golfer!   September 9, 2009
Sandra Slater (Gilroy, CA USA)
My 9 year old daughter absolutely loves this book! When she first received it, she insisted that we put in the read-along CD (included with the book) into the CD player. We got back home before the book was finished, but she was so involved with listening/following along, that we sat in the car until it was finished. She has read it many, many times since. It is wonderfully written for its target audience (although I have to say I enjoy it very much as well) and the illustrations are tremendous...colorful, imaginative, and artistic. Now when we take her to play golf, she cheerfully refers to the 'golf monsters'...her favorite is the bogey monster, which she loves to defeat. As a parent, I like the overall message of the book...that a goal/dream can be accomplished as long as you are persistant and face the challenges that come your way. I recommend this book to golfers of all ages!

"Lil' Jordan's 9 Holes of Fear," by Johnny Eugenio. (RYAN BENJAMIN)«1»Tiger Woods better watch his swing. It looks like an 11-year-old from Monterey is following in the golfer's proverbial footsteps. Jordan Eugenio not only started golfing at age 2 (just like Woods), he's also multiethnic, like Woods, and he's a fierce competitor on the green.

But Eugenio might have something that Woods doesn't-- this young, local golfer is being featured as the title character in a children's book about golf and fear. The story, "Lil' Jordan's 9 Holes of Fear," penned by Jordan's father, Johnny Eugenio, has wide appeal. It's both a sports picture book and a captivating adventure tale.

"9 Holes" tells the fictional story of Lil' Jordan, who wants to play on an adult golf course. The club president of the course scoffs at this notion and offers a challenge that if the boy can make it through nine holes, he will change the rules and allow children to play there. Lil' Jordan, with pure confidence, and not a notion of fear, tackles the challenge. He encounters a "Tree Monster," a "Pressure Monster," a "Water Monster," a "Weather Monster" and various other monsters, or more aptly put -- true problems that golfers have to deal with on the course.

"Golfers fear the pressure," says Johnny Eugenio, the author and real-life father of Lil' Jordan. "Every hole is different. Every golf course is different. Holes bend to the right or left. Trees are in front of you, and there are sand bunkers."

But these monsters are what make golfers improve their skills, and are challenges that the real-life Jordan has faced in his already full life as an accomplished golfer. His reputation as a young, successful golfer has earned him media attention from such outlets as CNN, ESPN and "Good Morning America."
Even though learning golf presents its challenges, Johnny believes the sport and its lessons have been invaluable to his son. "All kids should play some kind of sport," Johnny says. "They learn how to win, how to lose, to have teammates, and sportsmanship."

The tale came to life about four years ago when Johnny realized that he wanted to expose more children to the game of golf. The only catch is that Johnny admittedly isn't a writer; he's an insurance guy. But pair up one part fantastic story with an equal part creative passion, and you've got a captivating children's book in your hands. Johnny started off his writing process by exploring the common "monsters" that golfers deal with on the course. From there, he developed a story and plugged in his son, who serves as the perfect inspiration for the main character.

Johnny didn't want to self-publish the book, and needless to say, he never had to go that route. Fate, luck, whatever you call it, played its part and teamed him up with the publisher of "9 Holes" -- Dove Books, which took also accepted the accompanying artwork by Ryan Benjamin, which is definitely notable. The images are splashy, emotional, colorful and engaging.

"I wanted people to understand that being a kid, it's challenging to play golf," Johnny says. "A lot of kids are not accepted on golf courses. I had a problem with Jordan -- I brought him to some golf courses, and was told, "sorry, kids are not allowed to play on this golf course. Those are the rules." I started thinking about the problems of getting on golf courses."

As for "9 Holes," you'll have to read the book to see if Lil' Jordan indeed wins the challenge, overcomes the fear monsters and ultimately breaks down a barrier, thus allowing children to play on this fictional golf course
