5 out of 5 stars Love the new Kindle   September 10, 2010

I was already in love with the Kindle, but the improved contrast in the new Kindle DX is a major improvement worth noting. Easy on the eyes!

4 out of 5 stars Do we really need a kindle?   September 10, 2010

I purchased a Kindle DX about a month ago because I read a lot of technical books and thought it would make my book shelf a little lighter. Overall I like the device but there are a few things I missed. In technical books there are several acronyms throughout the book. That means that you have to refer to the index at the back of the book to refresh you memory. With the kindle you can't do that several times without losing your place in the book. Also when reading technical books the device does not tell you what page you are on in the book. You are also not able to look at the diagrams, tables, or table while reading about them. Especially if its a couple of pages ahead. This is a cool device for people that like to read novels but for technical publications it needs some work.

I was apprehensive about buying a kindle. But after noticing that EVERY flat surface in my home had books piled on it, I knew I had to do something!! I love my kindie. Almost all of my favorite authors are available. The free books don't hurt either. I went with the Kindle DX and don't regret it at all. I rec. a screen cover, and a cover..(mine is M EDGE, very nice.) If you are unsure, read some of the discussions. I have learned a great deal there.

3 out of 5 stars Useful, easy to use, but a bit limited from the point of software and hardware   September 10, 2010

The Kindle DX is easy to use, fast enough, and overall, I'm happy with it.

To me, it's very useful to have a large screen (but a bit larger would help) and the possibility of viewing PDFs. In landscape mode, the size of the screen is almost DIN A4, so viewing PDFs is easy. Bowever, the PDF reader is a bit limited: there is no free zoom rate (only 150%, 200%, and 300%), and in landscape mode, the PDF reader includes some annoying margins. It would be useful to remove margins altogether and make fonts as large as possible.

With respect to hardware, I'm missing wifi and a SD card reader. Being forced to use a computer in order to load PDF files is annoying.

The Kindle DX is a good piece of technology. If you are on a computer all day long and I have to read after work the Kindle would be the solution to the eyes problem. The Kindle is strongly oriented to the amercian user. If you want to read in cyrillic or other alphabeth you will have to have the text in pdf format. There are no monolingual dictionaries except for English. Monolingual dictionaries for the big languages are a necessary product that would sell well and are available in mobopocket format. Helas, the DRM would impead you from using these dictionaries on the Kindle. The most important thing about the Kindle DX is the big screen and the fact that you can read normal PDF files with no DRM in them. All the other things are secondary to me.
